What are Polynucleotides & do they work?

7th September 2024

The latest buzz in the beauty world is all about Polynucleotide Injections, a treatment that may sound surprising due to its unusual key ingredient: salmon sperm.

This concept has similarities to the salmon sperm facial that Jennifer Aniston reportedly loves, but instead of applying it topically, the trend involves injections that aim to rejuvenate the skin. Unlike the typical fillers people are familiar with, these injections focus on revitalizing the skin from within, and they’re rapidly gaining popularity, particularly overseas.

They’re touted to stimulate collagen production, enhance skin elasticity, and reduce the visible signs of aging. But what exactly are polynucleotide injections, and why is salmon sperm used? Here's a breakdown of this unique beauty trend.

WHAT ARE POLYNUCLEOTIDES?

Polynucleotide injections are considered a type of skin enhancer, similar to treatments like Profhilo, but they rely on polymerized polynucleotides instead of hyaluronic acid (HA). Polynucleotides are derived naturally from fish germ cells, specifically salmon, containing highly refined DNA fragments from fish reproductive tissues. These substances are thought to encourage the production of collagen and elastin in the skin. They may also help with hydration and are often used to treat under-eye circles. These injections are administered very close to the skin’s surface, unlike traditional dermal fillers, which are injected more deeply to add volume to specific areas of the face.

Traditional fillers, such as HA, are typically used to enhance facial volume and symmetry. Polynucleotide injections, on the other hand, do not aim to add volume. Instead, their purpose is to promote collagen growth and improve the overall texture and quality of the skin. Research suggests that salmon DNA is particularly effective for this purpose due to the longer polynucleotide chains it contains. The length of these chains can extend the period of tissue biostimulation, making the treatment’s effects last longer.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF POLYNUCLEOTIDE INJECTIONS?

Experts claim that polynucleotide injections can help reduce hyperpigmentation, increase collagen production, improve elasticity, smooth fine lines, and diminish the appearance of under-eye hollows. In some cases, HA fillers under the eyes can cause puffiness because of their tendency to attract water.

Polynucleotides, however, work in harmony with the body's natural DNA to encourage cell regeneration, potentially leading to brighter and healthier-looking skin around the eyes. This is achieved through increased cell turnover, reduced oxidative stress, and enhanced synthesis of the body’s own hyaluronic acid.
